[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Captain Li Shang
Age: Around 22
Gender: Male
Fandom: Mulan
Timeline: From just after the end of Mulan; i.e. after Mulan invites him to come for dinner
History: The tiny amount of info on Wikipedia and one I wrote.

Character Personality:
Shang most often appears as a thoughtful and calm leader. He exudes a presence of authority, and is firm but fair on his troops. However, he shows hints that he doesn't tolerate having his authority challenged - when Yao makes a snide remark about Shang being a "pretty boy", Shang uses Yao as an example by making him "fetch the arrow" in response.

He is also reserved, keeping emotions and over-excitability to a minimum. However, at times he looses his careful image of restraint - such as when he initially replies with giddy excitement to his promotion, which he then covers with more calm "Yes sir."

Shang also has his moments of hopeful dreaming, such as when he imagines himself as "Captain Lee Shang. Leader of China's finest troops. No, the greatest troops of all time." But at the heart of it, Shang wants to protect China and live up to his father's expectations, and when people - namely Chi Fu - suggest that he is less than capable, he is visibly upset by the accusation.

He has also shown to be very awkward when trying to interact with Mulan after he finds out she's a girl. He's fine talking battles and tactics with her, but when it comes to trying to have a normal conversion (or even just giving her a complement), Shang's usual calm demeanor disappears, and he becomes somewhat of a babbling idiot.

Character Abilities:
Shang is a trained warrior of the Chinese military, and as such he is highly skilled at the use of swords, longbows, quarterstaff, and horse riding. In fact, he rates as one of the more adept soldiers, being the "first in his class". He is disciplined, strong, and a highly formidable warrior.

He is also an excellent military leader, who is capable of being firm and authoritative, despite his youth and lesser experience than others. He also also shown considerable ability in training troops, as evidence by his ability to turn Mulan and the other conscripts into an effective fighting force.

Character Weaknesses:
While he a good leader, Shang doesn't always think creatively, and tends to stick with the more textbook plan or action - he needs others like Mulan to think up the more left-of-field plans for him. He also doesn't always keep up his "calm and reserved leader" persona, sometimes falling back into more youngish and excitable behavior.

He's also incredible awkward around Mulan, once he knows she's a girl and isn't "talking military" with her. In fact, it's highly possible that Shang doesn't really know much about how to interact socially outside of military situations. The result it that he ends up babbling and generally making a fool of himself.

Also, he seems to have a nasty habit of getting knocked unconscious all the time.

[ MEISTER SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Meister:
Shang is a physically fit and highly capable warrior. Furthermore, as he is in a position of leadership Shang is accustomed to guiding others and using his troops abilities to their best advantage. As such, Shang would be much better suited to wielding a weapon than being one.

[ SAMPLES ]

First Person:

[a slight cough, a few seconds of silence, and then a voice begins - a little unsure and hesitant at first, before quickly switching to a tone that implies utter confidence and self-control] Hello? I...I am Captain Li Shang. I understand that you and your people are besieged by war, but I have pledged my loyalty and service to China. I must return home.

[another pause. Now, with a definite hint of steel in his tone]

I need to speak to the person in charge.

Third Person:
When Shang was in his element, his was cool, in control, and commanding. On the training fields he knew what to say to spur his men on to greater to heights, to push themselves to their limits and beyond. And while he didn't have the same impressive experience on the like the great generals of China, when on the battlefield Shang knew when to when to retreat, when to attack, and when to execute a different plan of action.

But this was not Shang's element. Far, far from it. These buildings looked so vastly different from anything he'd seen back home in China that he was getting dizzy just looking at them. And what was he supposed to do with this strange metal thing?

Shang had almost jumped out of his skin in a very undignified way when voices first starting coming out of it. He was half-tempted to just leave it under a rock somewhere, but that ran the risk of offending whichever spirit was living in it.

And that, at least, was better than the strange apparition who had informed him that he'd been summoned to fight a strange war against witches.

Shang did not like this. He had no men, no information, and no idea of what to do next. If only Mulan were here, she'd know what to...

...Shang stumbled, just a little bit, over his own feet. But after a quick look around - right, no one noticed - Shang struck up a brisk walk, as if nothing had happened.

Shang needed to do something. He would find who was in charge, get some more information, and figure out how to get back to Mulan - err, China - as soon as possible.

[ NOTES ]
The length of time passing during training isn't specified in the movie - instead, I'm going by what Eme has been using for her interpretation for Mulan.

Also, if my Armstrong app is also accepted, then Shang will be my third character and second meister (Passed activity check here).
